Guilford County Board of Commissioners announced today that it has received and accepted the retirement announcement of County Manager Michael Halford.The Board met in closed session Friday afternoon at the Old Guilford County Courthouse, 301 W. Market St. Greensboro, NC to discuss a personnel matter during a special called meeting. Following that discussion, the Board unanimously accepted Mr. Halford’s retirement.
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed a case of measles in a child who was visiting Forsyth and Guilford counties. The child became ill while traveling to NC from another country where measles outbreaks have recently been reported. To protect the individual and their family’s privacy, no additional information about this individual will be released. This is the first confirmed case of measles in the state in 2025.

An extreme heat event occurs when temperatures remain significantly higher than average for several consecutive days. Starting Friday, June 13, through Monday, June 30, Guilford County Animal Services (GCAS) is reducing the adoption fees for cats and kittens from $75 to $25. Some cats at the Guilford County Animal Resource Center are still under quarantine following recent cases of panleukopenia virus (FPV) at the animal shelter. The quarantine period is scheduled to last through Thursday, June 26. While some cats remain in isolation, GCAS has many cats and kittens available for adoptions.
The Guilford County Division of Social Services (GCDSS) is actively seeking dedicated social workers to work in Child Protective Services. To connect with qualified candidates, GCDSS is hosting a hiring event with on-site interviews on Monday, June 16, from 2 to 6 p.m. at its Greensboro office, located at 1203 Maple St.
Guilford County is pleased to announce the appointment of Courtney McFadden, MPH, as the county’s new Division of Public Health director. In this role, she leads public health’s efforts in protecting and promoting the health of more than half a million residents, guiding a committed public health workforce, and advancing strategies focused on prevention, community engagement, and long-term impact. McFadden will serve as a team member of the Assistant County Manager for Successful People and Health and Human Services Director Victor Isler. Her first day is Monday, July 14.
