The Guilford County Board of Elections is committed to conducting fair, efficient, and impartial elections. People running for elected positions in Guilford County must adhere to the state and county's campaign finance rules and regulations. 

Candidate Campaign Finance Tips

Do:

  • Sign up for Treasurer Training as soon as possible.
  • Obtain all donor addresses and employment information. N.C.G.S. § 163‐278‐11(a)(1).
  • Amend organizational documents for all changes of information (ex., contact information, treasurer changes, committee name changes).
  • Amend your Certification of Threshold if your contribution/expenditure threshold changes.
  • Go inside the U.S. Post Office and get a postmark on the envelope with your campaign reports that are being mailed in place of being delivered in person.
  • Contact us in advance for questions regarding campaign finance reports. 

Do Not:

  • Wait until the reporting due date to start your campaign finance reports.
  • Close your bank account until you go through the committee closing process, regardless of your election outcome.
  • Take contributions from a business entity, corporation, professional association, insurance company, labor union, or non‐registered committee. Only the nonprofits that meet all requirements of N.C.G.S. § 163‐278.19(h) at the time of the contribution are allowed.
  • Take anonymous or joint contributions (ex., Mr. & Mrs. Joe Smith).
  • Take cash contributions of more than $50 per day/per person.
  • Expend more than $50 in cash per day/per person.
  • Accept more than $6,800 per person per election cycle (except for the candidate and spouse).
