Guilford County Animal Services has partnered with 17-year-old Evelyn McKnight, a local girl scout, to open two community pet pantries, providing free pet food and supplies to residents who need assistance caring for their pets.
The high school senior developed the pet pantry project while working toward the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. McKnight partnered with Guilford County Animal Services, Social Services, and Public Health to develop two locations where pet owners can access food and supplies for their animals. McKnight also brought local businesses and community organizations together to help complete the project. Diversified Fence Builders donated materials and constructed the two pantries, Budget Printing provided signage, and the Rotary Club of High Point, along with her friends, neighbors, swim and tennis teams, donated pet food and supplies to help stock the pantries.
“I’m grateful to everyone who helped bring the community pet pantries to life. I wanted to create something that would help pets and their families, especially when someone may be going through a difficult time and needs a little extra support,” said McKnight. “This project means a lot to me and as someone who hopes to pursue a career working with animals, being able to create a lasting resource for our community has been very rewarding. I am excited to see these pet pantries become available to those who need them.”
The community pet pantries are located at:
• Guilford County Social Services, 1203 Maple St., Greensboro
• Guilford County Public Health, 501 E. Green Drive, High Point
Pet owners who need assistance are welcome to visit either location to pick up available pet food and supplies at no cost. Community members can also support by donating pet food and supplies to help keep the pantries stocked.
“Providing access to pet food and basic supplies can make a meaningful difference for families who may be struggling to meet their pets’ needs,” said Jorge Ortega, Animal Services Director. “We are grateful for Evelyn’s initiative and for the partnership among our county departments that helped turn her idea into a resource that helps keep people and pets together in our community.”
