Low-income homeowners in Guilford County may soon be eligible for a financial assistance grant based on their annual income and home valuation. Applications will open on Wednesday, July 15th.
In 2004, the Guilford County Board of Commissioners directed staff to develop a grant program similar to the City of Greensboro’s Low-Income Assistance Program and allocated $500,000 for its implementation. The Board approved the program with some modifications at its latest budget retreat in March.
Residents who make 80% of the Area Median Income for one-person households ($53,200) to eight-person households ($100,350) can qualify. Additional program qualifications include:
- The home must be in Guilford County
- Applicants must own their homes for five consecutive years and must be their primary residence
- The home’s value must be $250,000 or less
- The first 30 days of the application period are for those 65 and older only
In the first program’s first year, the difference between the 2021 and 2025 county tax bill should be a minimum of $50. The county estimates that 62,000 parcels under $250,000 are eligible, with 8,500 of them designated as seniors-only. Payments are expected to average between $300 to $500.
The application period opens on Wednesday, July 15. The application deadline is Saturday, October 31. (by 5 p.m. ? ) Residents can apply online or by paper application through the Department of Social Services website. Applicants will be required to submit income verification documentation.
