The Guilford County Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health is alerting Guilford County residents that a skunk on NC 61S in Whitsett tested positive for the rabies virus on January 30, 2026. This is the fifth confirmed case of animal rabies in 2026.

The virtual public information meeting on the Guilford County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m.The Hazard Mitigation Plan identifies and assesses regional hazard risks for natural disasters and identifies strategies to minimize or manage those risks. Residents are encouraged to attend the virtual meeting to learn about the plan, ask questions, and submit comments for review, consideration, and potential modification of the plan. Residents can register to attend the meeting below.

The Guilford County Board of Commissioners is pleased to announce the appointment of Carolyn Thompson as the new County Attorney for Guilford County Government, effective Monday, Feb. 2, 2026.With more than twenty-seven years of legal and judicial experience, Attorney Thompson brings a wealth of knowledge, leadership, and public-sector expertise to the County Attorney’s Office. Her career reflects a strong commitment to public service, local governance, and the delivery of sound legal counsel in support of county operations.

Budget Director Toy Beeninga is Guilford County’s new Deputy County Manager. In this new role, he will serve as a key leader in the organization, providing strategic oversight for cross-departmental, inter-local and regional projects in economic development, capital and infrastructure planning, district court collaboration, non-profit engagement, legislative affairs and the County’s strategic plan.
Effective 10a.m. today, the State of Emergency declared for all areas of Guilford County to include the City of Greensboro, City of High Point, Towns of Gibsonville, Jamestown, Pleasant Garden, Sedalia, Stokesdale, Summerfield, Oak Ridge, and Whitsett by Board of County Commissioners’ Chairman Melvin ‘Skip’ Alston for Winter Storm Fern will be terminated.
Guilford County offices and facilities will open under normal hours Wednesday, Jan. 28, with two exceptions:Due to some icy road and greenway conditions, all Guilford County Parks will continue to be closed Wednesday, Jan. 28.Guilford County Transportation and Mobility Services (TAMS) will operate on a delayed start, beginning services at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 28.
