Well Water Sampling Results Conducted in the Airport Area of Guilford County (Health Information)

Post Date:01/31/2019 8:54 AM

In 2015, the City of Greensboro conducted surface water sampling for Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), including PFOA & PFOS, at its water supply sources.  The results showed that the surface waters near the Greensboro Airport (Piedmont Triad International Airport) have been impacted by these compounds.  To ensure the health and safety of its customers, the City of Greensboro has taken proactive measures to protect its public water supply.

As a result of the City of Greensboro sampling, Guilford County Department of Public Health identified residential water supply wells in this same (airport) area, and along with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), collected groundwater samples to make sure that water supply wells in this area are not impacted by the PFOS compounds. This was a precautionary and proactive measure since no data showed water supply wells in the area had been impacted.

As part of this joint effort to evaluate any potential groundwater contamination in this area by these compounds, Guilford County Public Health and NCDEQ staff collected water samples in December 2018 from the water supply wells that had been identified.  A total of 40 water supply wells were sampled.  Of the 40 wells sampled, 3 wells indicated the presence of PFOA & PFOS, but the concentration was below EPA’s drinking water health advisory of 70 ng/L. Several of the remaining water samples reported estimated values that were well below EPA’s drinking water health advisory. After review and discussion of the sample results, it was determined that Guilford County Public Health and NCDEQ plan to continue to monitor and resample 9 water supply wells in this area. The resampling of those water supply wells will occur in the spring of 2019.  All residents were notified of their well water results by letters sent out from the state on Friday, January 25, 2019.
