Guilford County Public Health Welcomes New Medical Director
Dr. Maricelina Caro recently joined Guilford County Public Health as their full time Medical Director. She is a Tar Heel who graduated from UNC Chapel Hill, Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, trained in Internal Medicine at Indiana University in Indianapolis, and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine.
Her career has been for care of unique people in unique venues; including primary care, medical care for individuals with mental illness, and most recently elder care in skilled nursing facilities. Dr. Caro states that her approach to medical care focuses on kindness, safety, effectiveness, and value. Her passions in health care include the sharing of new ideas and problem solving with people of diverse backgrounds bound by the common interest of healthcare excellence.
Dr. Caro’s medical expertise will be the key factor in the Department’s expansion into a larger focus on primary care health services. This need was addressed when Public Health Department leaders noticed that many public health patients were utilizing the Department’s clinical services for episodic health issues, but were not attached to a medical home. With the transformation of Medicaid in NC, and the knowledge that good medical care must include comprehensive medical services, the Department turned its focus on expanding their Primary Care offerings for their existing adult patient populations.
Dr. Caro’s favorite pastimes include mixed media art, and generally spending time with her two daughters.
Guilford County welcomes Dr. Maricelina Caro to the Public Health team.
