Sheriff BJ Barnes reports the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office is coordinating with local law enforcement agencies operating within Guilford County and the Guilford County School system to organize a joint agency school bus initiative. According to the Guilford County School system’s website, 42,000 students are transported on 551 Guilford County School buses every day. On an average day, these buses travel over 50,000 miles. Every school year multiple complaints of citizens speeding in school zones and passing stopped school buses are reported to law enforcement. Unfortunately, some of these instances result in death or serious injury.

The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting "Operation Stop Arm" throughout Guilford County on August 27th, 2018. The goal of Operation Stop Arm is to prevent loss of life and injury through awareness and voluntary compliance. The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of other local law enforcement agencies, will be heavily enforcing traffic laws in school zones, as well as patrolling bus routes in an effort to prevent violations and build awareness.
